Six years ago, we chose Sharon. Now, I’m asking Sharon to choose me.

We came here for the community first, the schools second. We fell in love with this town's people, its natural beauty, and its commitment to education. What we appreciated most of all was the passion and open-mindedness of this deeply diverse community.

It is with this diversity in mind that I am running for School Committee. I am a first-generation immigrant, raised at the crossroads of two cultures. We spoke only Mandarin at home where my parents raised me steeped in Chinese heritage whilst blending with and appreciating being American. Inclusion built a bridge between two worlds for me, and it is this unique perspective I hope to bring to the discussion.

I am the daughter of a language teacher and a humanities professor. I am the granddaughter of a math teacher and an economics professor. I come from five unbroken generations of educators and administrators, and a deep, abiding respect for education flows in my veins and has been the filter through which I've always experienced the world. I believe to my core that public schools have the potential to nurture the most well-rounded, well-adjusted citizens of the world.

I am indebted to my public education for the person I am today: for paving a path to success at The University of Chicago; for encouraging me to explore and develop my diverse interests and talents that ultimately led to professional careers in finance, PR, performance, publishing, nonprofit, and even pastry and cake decorating; for helping me to understand myself as an individual in the context of a bigger whole and inspiring me to always approach life from the perspective of, "what can I do to contribute to my community?"

ACCESS FOR ALL

Equitable access is the core tenet of education. Access to a curriculum that meets every child’s needs. Access to services that will support our students. Access to opportunities that will challenge them to reach their highest potential as world citizens. Let’s ensure that all our children are set up for success.

INCLUSION

It’s time to act on inclusion. We live in a wonderfully diverse community, where nearly half our student body is non-white. Minority voices can no longer be left out of the conversation. Diverse perspectives deserve to be at the table. Representation matters.

COLLABORATION

We teach our children to be team players, so let’s lead by example by listening to each other with consideration and restoring dialogue to a tenor Sharon can be proud of. School Committee needs to reestablish trust and working relations not only amongst themselves but with our teachers, administration, and community. We need to mend the fractures that have been exacerbated by one of the most difficult years any of us has experienced. I would like to propose establishing coffee hours with teachers, PTO, and parents on a regular basis. Let’s come together and refocus our efforts on our children.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

Every dollar should be spent for the benefit of our children. We need fiscal transparency and accountability in order to make tough decisions and nuanced compromises that we can stand behind. As a development consultant for Asia Society, I single-handedly raised and managed a $1 million programming budget and have experience managing every aspect of fiscal accountability and decision making.

SERVICE

Service has always been a cornerstone of my life. I co-founded the Sharon Mutual Aid Network in response to the COVID pandemic and partner with local organizations to help families in need. I created a Community Outreach Coordinator position for our local chapter of Moms Club, focusing on diversity and inclusion programming for young children. I recently sat as the Community Representative on the Superintendent Screening Committee, an experience that further solidified my desire to serve our schools.

A year later, we are still in a global pandemic. Now, more than ever, our children need us. I promise to work tirelessly for them: it’s time to focus on what really matters.
